In the first three months of 2023, South Korea imported 8,000 tons of mangos valued at $36.4 million from Vietnam, down 18% in volume and 19% in value from the same period the year before, according to the agency, which cited data from the Korea International Trade Association (KITA). According to the Vietnam Trade Office in South Korea, the considerable pressures that increasing interest rates and inflation are putting on the Korean economy would mean that a number of variables will still affect Vietnam's exports to the country in 2023.
Vietnamese businesses should pay special attention to upholding the country's Sanitary and Phytosanitary Standards (SPS) in order to promote the export of Vietnamese commodities, especially processed foods and agricultural and aquatic products, to South Korea. According to the office, efforts should be focused on enhancing communication and collaboration between domestic business associations and their Korean counterparts, as well as with South Korean distribution corporations like Lotte Mart, E-Mart, Home Plus, and CJ Home Shopping, to boost sales opportunities in South Korean supermarkets and distribution channels.
In addition, other recommendations were made, including assisting Vietnamese companies to market and sell their products on well-known Korean e-commerce sites like Coupang and Gmarket, encouraging Vietnamese exporters to take part in prestigious trade exhibitions in South Korea, and organizing study visits for Korean companies looking to collaborate on trade and investment with Vietnamese companies and associations. It went on to say that Vietnam in particular needs a stronger structure to encourage Korean businesses to work together and invest in cultivating agricultural products to be sold in South Korea.
Mango imports from Japan increased by 300% in Korea and 130% in Vietnam, respectively. This brought up a lot of opportunities but also placed pressure on producers to improve quality.
Mango growers received the previously mentioned information on March 15th, at an online seminar organized by the Dong Thap Plant Protection Sub-Department. Vietnam now exports fresh mangoes to 22 countries, mostly China, and mango products to 53 countries. It is anticipated that 600,000 tons of mangoes will be exported to foreign countries in 2021—a 42% rise from 2020. It is equivalent to Korea's 130% increase in output, where exports to Japan increased from 215 tons in 2020 to 640 tons in the previous year.
